This Was the Week That Was/n't

 

Who remembers the television show This Was the Week That Was with David Frost?  Raise your hand if you're old enough.  Hey!  You!  You crouching down back there!  Raise your hand.  I see you trying to hide at the back of the row.  I know you're old enough to remember it, so up with the hand you go.  Even though I was fourteen years old and way too young and ignorant to understand political satire, for some reason I remember watching it with my mother. I guess I was quite impressionable.  I do remember I loved English accents.  Funny that.  Now I have one to listen to every day courtesy of husband's lovely southeastern English accent.   

I'm marking time. It's seems like it was just Tuesday and now, suddenly, it's Friday. We move back into our house in five days. It's going to seem odd, but in a good way. We've spent three months living in our travel trailer. It's got about 450 square feet of living space. It's small but has all the conveniences of home...fridge, freezer, stove, oven, microwave, nice bathroom facilities and bedroom with queen size bed. It’s like living in a doll house. Everything is there, just in miniature. On Tuesday, we move back into 2300 sq feet plus lanai of living space. At first the house will seem cavernous. I’ll walk in the front door slowly and inhale the molecules of what makes the essence of home for me. When husband isn’t looking I’ll saunter into the kitchen and kiss the ceramic topped stove as I open the door gently and gaze into the big convection oven. My glance will light upon the Kitchen Aid stand mixer and I’ll gently whisper, “I’m back My Love…soon we’ll dance together again.” Throwing open the double doors of the refrigerator and adoringly scanning the shining glass and white interior of that behemoth. I’ll feel a slight twinge of guilt for cheating on the stove, but it will pass as soon as I tiptoe into the laundry room and hug those glorious Maytags. No more Laundromats for me! I’m not even going to get into my love affair with the bedspreads or the dining room set. Oh goodness! I almost forgot about the dining room furniture! How could I? We bought it new last Spring and haven’t yet even ever had a chance to eat at it ourselves. I love looking at it so much, I hate to use it to eat.

I guess what this big love affair with the house boils down to is that I started redecorating it almost the moment I moved into it.  I am sooooo not a pastel pink walls and accents and white furniture kind of girl.  The house is now a true reflection of me, not the original South Florida designer.  Below are a few before and after photos and here is a slideshow (give it time to load) of the house from last year when we went momentarily insane and listed it for sale.  And finally, because I know you're wondering how, if I love the house so much, I can bear to rent it to strangers (they're nice strangers) and live in a trailer for three months, I have almost twenty-thousand reasons and every single one of them has a picture of George Washington upon it.  This year's rental is paying for new kitchen cabinets and countertops this summer.

What else have I been up to?  Hmmmmm...not much.  I've been trying to organize the recipes guest bloggers (you know who you are and I adore you for submitting your recipe) have emailed to me.  My plan is to do one every Sunday.  On April 17th we are leaving on a 2 week transatlantic cruise and then will spend a month in England.  One of the reasons that I chose SquareSpace to host this blog and all of it's components is that it can be set to post entries at a future date.  So my plan is to type up/create posts and set them to publish while we are at sea.  I haven't figured it all out yet, but am sure it will be doable.  Once in UK, I will have computer access.  Not only is computer access expensive at sea, but I am determined not to waste one second of this adventure tethered to the laptop keyboard.

And finally, in the Dana Must Be Ill Department:

Yesterday I informed husband that I needed some time alone.  I adore him, but 24/7 together anywhere much less in the small trailer space is a delicate balance at best.  I'm surprised there isn't more spousal homocide in the retired group, really.  I took myself off shopping.  I went to Marshalls, TJ Maxx, Steinmart and the mall.  I was gone for five hours.  Other than a scrumptious gyro at Greek Jalapeno in the mall food court, I BOUGHT NOTHING.  I am worried about myself.  Although, I am forgetting that little foray into J Crew two weeks ago where I bought these things:

  

  

These things were absolutely positively necessary (as I explained to husband) because I have a cruise packing plan.  I am packing by color and wearing only black, white, red, navy and tan.  Simplifies things a lot for mixing and matching and therefore less suitcase space needed and less baggage etc..  My navy category needed some ummmmm what's the word/expression?....Oh yes, fluffing up.  That's my story and I'm sticking to it....

Guest Recipe Blogger-Janet, UK

Happiness abounds!!!  We've got our first victim...errr...I mean "Guest Recipe Blogger."  It is none other than my lovely sister-in-law, Janet who lives in a bucolic village in the southeastern UK.  Her recipe, Whole Orange Cake, is scrumptious and can be found here, in our Guest Recipe Blogger Section.  I first had the cake at a party at Janet's house and immediately declared it "my favorite cake."  This is noteworthy because it isn't a chocolate cake.  Who knew any cake other than chocolate could be so wonderful?  I have since made the cake on my side of the pond and it's a hit every time.

This Week in Review and a Request...

I bet you've been thinking that I've been off somewhere eating BonBons and getting my toenails painted, haven't you? Pffftttt, you're wrong! Well, not totally wrong. I did get a pedicure last week, but I was long overdue for some prettifying. I deserved a pedicure. I promise, though, that I have not eaten any Bon Bons. I'm not really sure what a Bon Bon even is. Is it like a truffle? I do adore truffles, especially Belgian truffles. Sorry...I'm digressing.

If you suscribe to Ebb and Flow and haven't received email notification of new postings I can explain. While I haven't written any of these newsy little blatherings to you, I have been busy behind the scenes here in my little cyberspace editing room. I have now transferred ALLof my recipes here from their former home on my one time web page. They can be found by using the links above that are accessed by clicking the Recipe Collection tab.

I have also transferred all of my travel journal entries for our home exchange to LeTignet, France in November of 2008 as well as journal entries for our visit to England in UK in October 2007. These entries can all be accessed by clicking on the UK/France 2007 tab above.

I have begun transferring files that contain journal entries from our westward RV trip last year on which we were joined by brother-in-law, David and sister-in-law Janet from England. These photo-journalistic entries chronicle a nine and a half week odyssey from Florida to Arizona. There are many files to transfer. You can access these entries by clicking on the Westward Ho! tab.

Finally, here's my latest idea. I'd like to add reader submitted recipes. I will be sending emails to everyone I know and also soliciting recipes here. If you have a favorite recipe you'd like to share with the world, I'd like to offer it up here with you as a guest blog author. It isn't necessary to have photos of the food. Just send me the recipe via email with a brief description of why it's a favorite of yours ie. "a dish my grandmother made when I was a child" or "my children's favorite" or whatever..be creative. Please add a short bio of you...one or two lines and tell me how you would like your name ...such as "Janet from the UK" or "Alisa from Texas" or whatever you choose. I am thinking to create a separate tab for guest recipes.

Please say you'll help. It gets lonely here behind the monitor screen banging away at this clunky old typewriter. Please email recipes to dana77kc-at-comcast-dot-net. I will offer up one guest recipe per week. What do you think? A cool idea? Good! I thought you'd agree.

Lemon Chicken With Croutons

I love Ina Garten, The Barefoot Contessa. If I ever grow up, I want to be her. She has a beautiful, serene home in the Hamptons and a serene manner about herself. While I don't know her personally, she seems calm and laughs easily. I didn't realizethat she and I share the same journey to French cooking until I just read a biography of her for this post that states "...the couple journeyed to Paris, France, for a four-month camping vacation that Garten has described as the birth of her love for French cuisine. During this trip, she experienced open-air markets, produce stands, and fresh cooking ingredients for the first time.  Upon returning to the U.S., she began to cultivate her culinary abilities by studying the volumes of Julia Child's seminal cookbook, Mastering the Art of French Cooking."  This is exactly the path I followed to my love of French cooking, meeting John, traveling many times to France, becoming enthralled with French open air markets featuring the freshest of fresh cheeses, meat, seafood and produce.  Here is a brief slide show of one of my favorite markets in France, the Tuesday market at St. Palais sur Mer, a resort town on the French Atlantic coast.

Pasta E Fagioli

Pasta E Fagioli

 

1 1/2 cup small shell or ditalani pasta

2 Tablespoons olive oil

1/4 lb finely chopped salt pork or bacon

1 large onion finely chopped

1 Tablespoon minced parsley

1 Cup celery finely diced

1 cup prepared spaghetti sauce

1/2 tsp salt

1/8 tsp pepper

1 quart water

1 can EITHER white cannellini or dark red kidney beans, undrained

Grated Italian cheese for topping

 

Heat olive oil in a large sauce pan. Add salt pork/bacon and braise for a few minutes. Add onions, celery and garlic; brown well. Add sauce, salt and pepper; cook 10 minutes, stirring occasionally. Add warm water and beans and bring to a boil. Reduce heat and simmer for 15 minutes. Stir in macaroni and boil uncovered until macaroni is cooked. Stir frequently to keep prevent macaroni from sticking. Serve piping hot topped with a good quality grated Italian cheese.
